POV: Should You Tell Them in an Interview?

Many have asked me, “Should I tell the company I’m pregnant of that I have a long-term illness during the interview?”

Here’s my take:

Rule No. 1️⃣: You can’t lie.
Most companies now have declaration process during the application stage. Lying about health or pregnancy status could be considered a pre-employment misrepresentation, which is a major misconduct that puts your job at risk.

Rule No. 2️⃣: Be clear on your objective.
Before disclosing, ask yourself, “Am I sharing this to get support?”

The cold, hard truth:
A hiring manager may appreciate your honestly… and still decide not to hire you after learning about your condition.

Rule No. 3️⃣: Prepare for rejection, but take control of the narrative.
Now, if you choose to disclose, pair your honestly with reassurance.
For example, “I’m managing this with medical support. It won’t affect my ability to perform.”

That shifts the focus from your condition to your capability.

Rule No. 4️⃣ : Pick you timing strategically.
Sometimes, it’s wise to secure the role first and built trust internally before sharing sensitive details.
Think about it.

Bottom line, be truthful, but also be tactical.
Be ready for biases and counter them with confidence, evidence, and professionalism.

Happy weekend, everyone! Remember, be clear and be calm. Frame your narrative to earn trust, and let your skills do the talking. Not pity.
