So many people get confused about this.
You submitted your resignation on 31 July and then wondered why you didn’t get paid for the 31 August public holiday.
First, check your termination notice in your employment contract.
Understand that 30 days, 4 weeks, and 1 month are all different.
Here’s what it means for this scenario (resignation submitted on 31 July):
• If your notice period is 4 weeks, your last day in payroll is 27 August.
• If your notice period is 30 days, your last day in payroll is 29 August.
• If your notice period is 1 month, your last day in payroll is 30 August.
Now, to get paid for 31 August, assuming your notice period is 1 month (the most common), you would need to submit your resignation on 1 August instead.
To shorten or extend your notice period, even by 1-2 days, both employer and employee must mutually agree.
And the formula to pro-rate your salary, as per EA1955 Section 18A:
Monthly Wages / Number of days of the particular wage period x Number of days eligible in the wage period
Example: RM3500 / 31 days in August x 30 days = RM3,387.10
Hope this clear things up. 🫰
