POV: Why Do Job Hoppers Often Earn More?

They are usually for a few reasons.

1️⃣ Competitors pay for speed.

If you’re already doing the same role in the same industry, you require less training and can contribute almost immediately. Time is money. Many employers are willing to pay premium for someone who can hit the ground running. I personally benefited from this when I changed jobs within my industry.

2️⃣ The market decides your value.

Inside a company, salary increases are often constrained by annual increment budgets and internal salary structures. An external employer doesn’t have those limitations. They’ll pay what they believe your skills are worth in today’s market.

3️⃣ You’re helping solve a business problem.

The biggest salary increases I’ve seen happen because a candidate is solving a difficult hiring problem. Perhaps they’re filling a leadership gap, bringing scarce niche skills, or joining a fast-growing company that urgently needs someone with relevant experience.

That’s why many professionals receive significantly salary increases by:
• Moving into a bigger role
• Switching to a fast-growing industry
• Entering a niche where their skills are scarce
• Relocating to another country or region

So yes, I’m all for changing jobs when it makes sense. I’ve done it myself.

But don’t fall into the trap of thinking that simply changing companies makes you more valuable.

Think about it.
