Part 1: Career Break (The Question)

“Why did you leave your previous job before finding a new one?”

It’s one of the most common interview questions.

And yes, it’s a fair question.

But what happens next says a lot about the interviewer.

“I took a career break.”
“Oh? Was it because you couldn’t cope?”
“No…”
“Were there performance issues?”
“No…”
“Something must have gone wrong.”

Yes, you jumping to conclusions.

A career break is simple a period between jobs and the reasons can be incredibly diverse.

Time to recover from burnout. (that was me)
Caring for parents or children.
Travelling.
Focusing on health.
Completing professional certifications.

But none of these reasons automatically tell us whether someone will perform well in their next job.

As interviewers, our responsibility isn’t to judge the gap but to understand the story behind it.

So keep asking questions like:

“What made you decide the break was necessary?”
“What did you learn during that period?”
“What made you decide you’re ready to return now?”
“Why is this role the right next step for you?”

These follow-up questions reveal far more about a candidate’s maturity, self awareness and motivation than the gap itself ever could.

Remember, a career break is just a chapter, not the entire story.

Think about it. 💛
