My bff told me he wished he had supernatural powers so he could hurt the people who had wronged him.
He was inspired by Carrie, the story about a teenage girl who discovers she has telekinetic powers and uses them to take revenge on people who bullied and humiliated her.
And I think most of us have fantasised about revenge in one form or another.
Maybe not to the extent of killing somebody with our minds, but haven’t we all wished that someone who hurt us would experience the same pain they caused us?
When someone treats us unfairly, we want justice. When someone humiliates us, we want them to feel humiliated too. And when someone gets away with hurting us, we want them to face the consequences.
But here’s where things get interesting.
What if you actually had those supernatural powers? You could hurt anybody who wronged you, and nobody would ever find out.
Would you use them?
I’d like to believe most of us wouldn’t. But I also wonder how much of our good behaviour comes from our moral values and how much comes from our fear of consequences.
Perhaps the real test of our character isn’t how we behave when we’re powerless, but what we choose to do when we have the power to hurt someone.
Just because we can doesn’t mean we should.
