When May Chong was casually interviewing me, I told her I was looking for work that is related to engineering but not as an engineer. She said she has the right job for me. Branch Assistant. Which is a fancy name for Front Desk. Because she was going to start a division specialising in engineering hirings “soon”.
So this would be a good training ground for me. 2 years later, there was still no engineering department. Anyhow, when I first started, she assigned me to the Key Accounts team as my training ground. Her justification of conning me to the job is that one of the Key Account is actually a giant Japanese “electronics” consumer brand. But we were managing the retail side of the business 😐.
That was back in 2003. Fast forward 2021, I’m still in the business.
Eventually the engineering division was formed but I was never part of that team. By then, I was so good at my job because in Key Accounts Management, you need to be process driven. And in engineering school that was what I was being trained for. That is when I’ve learnt, you can find joy in any work you do, if you choose & allow it to be.
