Okay, Selangor workmen, another public holiday is coming… or not.
Sunday, 25 October 2026, has been gazetted as Selangor State Public Holiday for the Silver Jubilee Celebration of the reign of the Sultan of Selangor.
So people are asking, “Aunty! Monday, 26 October cuti or not?!”
Answer: DEPENDS.
First, this is NOT one of the five mandatory public holidays under Section 60D of the Employment Act.
Just like the SUKMA’s 1 September holiday, you need to check your company’s public holiday policy.
If your company says it observes ALL gazetted Federal and State public holidays, then YES, your company has to observe this holiday.
But if your company only observes a specified list of public holidays, then the company is not legally required to observe it.
Now comes the Monday question.
If your company IS observing this public holiday, and Sunday is your rest day, i.e. 7th day of the week and not the 6th, then the Employment Act says the next working day immediately following the rest day becomes the paid holiday.
Meaning, if Monday is your next working day… YES! MONDAY CUTI! 🥳
But employers and employees may also agree to substitute the holiday with another day.
Anyway… I also want to add that this is the Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years of the reign of Sultan Selangor.
It is a significant occasion.
It’s only mid-September and the holiday is at the end of October, so we have more than a month to plan manpower, shifts, customer coverage and business operations.
Though companies may not be legally required to observe this holiday, I do hope companies in Selangor will consider giving the day off to commemorate this special milestone.
Not everything we give employees has to be because of the law forces us to.
Sometimes, we can just be nice.
After all, the smallest gestures from leaders can create the biggest goodwill at work.
