I remember they told me that he was really a good sales person but somehow, not hitting the numbers. “So see what you can do with him.” And I remember, it was the 4th month he was with me, he texted me & said he wanted to resign already.
I dropped everything I was doing and brought him out for coffee. He told me he had never feel this way – failing at work. Orders he worked so hard to bring in, not filled. Promises he gave to customers not delivered.
He had enough. Of course he did. I would too. I can understand his frustration. So much effort and yet.
That afternoon with him, it’s still clear in my head for it was the turning point in our relationship. We also spoke about a lot of personal failures in our lives. The common theme, it is so important for breadwinners like him & me to provide. That means making money.
I asked, “Do you have a job offer yet?” He said no. Then I said, “Then stay with me first. We will get this fixed.”
Two months later, he & the team won an award. The key account we assigned to him, the headcount grew by 67%, the GP grew by 61%, the attrition improved by 87% and the account receivables (so important this to collect money) improved by 98%.
The client wrote compliments like “Team has remarkable problem solving abilities and helpful” and “Amazed by team’s effort”. All these came from a client who had plans to terminate our services 6 months ago. Amazing, don’t you think?
Fast forward 10 years later, year 2021, he won the Top Country Rainmaker Award hitting 259% of his GP target (he also has the highest target in the country). For the 3rd time no less he received this award.
He really taught me the lesson, at the lowest point of your career/life, think about the people you love. Does not matter how we start the race. It’s how we end the race that matters. So we kept going forth to finish the race together.
