Some years back, for almost 2 years, every Wednesday night you’d find me at Petaling Street area. With a group of people, I would walk 2km to 4km, bringing warm food & clean water to the homeless.
Every Wed night, I’d sit down with the young and the elderly & I listened to their stories about how they ended up in the streets. Street friends, we called them. And there’s this one story I’ll always remember.
He was a young man who actually had a home but it was at Batang Berjuntai. He also actually had a job as a general worker in KL City. With the money he earned, he told me he couldn’t afford to commute daily from Bajang Berjuntai to KL & renting a room in KL was/is too expensive. So, he slept anywhere and washed himself at the masjid.
Then, he told me this, “Saya balik sebulan sekali lepas gaji. Balik jumpa mak. Mak tak sihat sangat sekarang. Okay je…”
“Okay je,” he said. Such a simple expression but it such a wow one for me.
When I heard that, I thought, so much to learn from this young man, really. So positive, regardless. So contented, regardless. So grateful, regardless.
Happy weekend, everybody. I, too, have to remind myself whatever that is happening in my life, I should always be grateful. Okay je, regardless.
