My friends always tell me, do not give money to the beggars who come to us when we are dining at eateries. They are part of a syndicate that cheats money. Even if they are not, I am just encouraging them to be lazy. They have a pair of hands, they should work.
My friends are not wrong but I do make an exception for the elderly. They are so old already, what do you expect them to do? You think they can get a job easily? Gimme a break.
I was just reading a report that said 1 in 5 people above 40 faced age discrimination when looking for a job. It gets worse as age increases (surprise, surprise). Now, that worries me for I am in that age group.
Because it’s hard to teach old dogs new tricks, right? And in this day and age, it’s important to learn new tricks.
But let me tell you this. I was reading another report that found that higher levels of resilience are associated with increasing age, suggesting that the younger ones are not always as resilient as those who are older.
I will argue in this day and age, adaptability & resilience is so much more important. And I’ve worked with people who are much older than me. 50s. 60s. Kerry Hannon said it best, “Mojo. Older workers tend to be poised and self-assured. The best employees are those who bring a mix of confidence and expertise – that combo shines with the rich patina that comes with age.”
So you young generations out there who is taking over the workforce (remember one day you will be just as old as us too), please be kind and don’t ignore us old dogs. For we definitely have the mojo to be very adaptable learning all these fucking new shiny tricks with you.
