I am a very busy person indeed. That is why for me to be able to go on a peaceful holiday, it does require some precise planning.
1. Timing is important. With best endeavors, I try to avoid payroll and month end closing period when I am the busiest. Also, I check my calendar to see if there is any important event I need to attend so I can manage that ahead.
2. Handover, handover, handover. My handover starts 2 weeks in advance so it allows space for error to correct while I still have the time before I go.
3. One week before my holiday, I will keep reminding everybody – subordinates, peers, bosses, customers & vendors that I will be away. So if there is anything urgent you want me to attend to, this is the time you tell me. I also have more frequent meetings with my direct reports to make sure they are ready to stand in while I am away.
4. Towards the actual holiday date, I will put in the extra hours to rush all the reports & tasks that are due up to the week after my holiday. Because I also factor in the time when I am back on leave I will be busy with my unread emails and ‘things’ to catch up, so that I don’t fall behind my work so bad.
As much as we don’t like people to kacau us during holidays, people also don’t like to kacau us actually. So the very least, we also need to do our part to make sure all things are in order, if it make sense.
And of course, last but not least…
5. Be determined NOT to pack my laptop. The business will always go on with or without me. Preferably without me during my eat, pray, love holiday.
