It basically refers to an employee having a second job outside her/his full time job. So just like how the term suggested, this 2nd job is normally performed at night, under the moon, so to speak.
Now, a lot of companies does not have a policy about it but doesn’t mean employees can take advantage of it. Companies are normally okay with employees having a 2nd source of income, rules, though silent, applies. Like…
1. Whatever the business is about, it absolutely cannot compete or have a conflict of interest with company’s business.
2. Employees cannot let the 2nd job affect their productivity on their full time job. Often it’s related to tardiness issues. I know a lot actually took emergency leave and faked sick leave, just because their other job is ‘urgent’ – they all ended up fired. The company paid you a full salary and should not had to compete for your attention. So be very careful to consider the additional stamina you need to perform the 2nd job.
3. Just like how we cannot use the company’s hours to perform jobs that is not related to the company, we cannot use the company’s resources too. This includes tools, equipment, applications or any confidential information that we are trusted with by the company.
And of course, if the company finds out and they feel strongly that it’s not aligned to 1, 2 & 3, especially #1, if they are nice enough, they will negotiate with us to quit moonlighting.
