I started out my career in the workforce solutions industry as a Branch Assistant. In layman terms, I was the Receptionist. Though I have a degree, I did not mind starting from the beginning.
I was paid an assistant salary but because I was quite a competent one, my manager tasked me with executive jobs. I didn’t mind the extra tasks that were given to me because I saw it as an opportunity to learn. 4 months later, one of the executive tendered resignation and the decision to promote me to that position was a no brainer for my boss because as an assistant, I was already performing as an executive.
That was some odd 19 years ago & I have not looked back since.
Actually, come to think about it, my whole adult life I have built my career by looking for opportunities to be one step ahead. When I was an assistant, I was doing an executive’s job. When I was an executive, I was doing a supervisor’s job. When I was a supervisor. I was doing a manager’s job.
Of course, I was lucky to be given the opportunities. But most importantly, my efforts paid off when I was duly promoted to be the executive/supervisor/manager.
You know, just like how motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said, “You have to be before you can do, and do before you can have.”
Be the person & embrace the accountability. Do what the person does & learn from the experience. And eventually when the time is right, you will be ready to have the person’s job.
