I was asked this before, “Knowing that you ended up in HR, if you can turn back time, would you still choose engineering as your field of study?”
Well, yes. I believe it’s my engineering education background that makes me a different HR in fact.
Because you know we engineers, we are always curious about how things work. With this curiosity, it trains our problem solving skills and constantly drives us to look into ways to make things better, improving effeciencies.
We are also very process driven and over the years I’ve come to realised to be successful in HR, one needs to be very process driven too! Perfect match!
All I had to do was put in extra effort to learn about the technical side of HR. Then, I combine both my HR & engineering knowledge together to drive innovations in HR. Don’t you think that’s cool? 😁
Anyways, this somehow reminds me of the Chinese idiom 行行出状元 (háng háng chū zhuàngyuán) which loosely translates to in every field/job you do, you will be able to achieve greatness.
Doesn’t matter what it is we are pursuing. Put in the hard work and apply our knowledge & experience right, success will be inevitable.
Including engineers in HR.
