There was once an employee asked me, “If I put you as a referee, can you not share with them about my disciplinary records?”
“You mean you want me to lie if they ask me if you have any record in disciplinary?”
“Yes, I would really appreciate that if you could help me with that.”
Oh. Wow.
Well, if you do have disciplinary record in the past, this is what I would suggest – Come Clean with your potential employer. Yes, it might decrease your chance of getting employed for sure but for me it will beat the drama that you’ll need to go through later when your new employer accuses you of hiding information. This reminded me the Chinese saying, “Fire cannot wrap paper.” The truth will come out eventually.
Anyways, all of us had made mistakes in the past. The difference would be, are we feeling remorseful over our mistakes? Did we learn from our mistakes? How did we bounce back from our mistakes? That would be a more important story to tell and for potential employers to know.
However, if your potential employer do not have an interest to listen to your story because ‘a misconduct is a misconduct’, oh well, I would also suggest you go look for another more empathetic potential employer instead. And move on just like how we moved on from our mistakes.
