I’ve been in the recruitment game for 20 years, and it’s true that ageism exists.
It doesn’t matter how young you look or how fit you are. There was a time I proposed a well-qualified 54-year-old candidate for a GM role, and the client remarked, “He is a bit over the hill.” Having clients specify a preference for candidates “below 35” is all too common.
So, I get it. When you’re 40 or older, hunting for a job can feel like an uphill battle. But that doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom for those of us over 40.
I’ve seen so many folks over 40 find their way. In fact, I know quite a few of them personally who even took a complete 180, diving into a whole new field and thriving there.
And I’ve observed these success stories have one thing in common. They didn’t land the job because of some flashy resume. It was because someone vouched for them. It’s the people you know, the relationships you’ve built over the years that can make all the difference. Your network can be your lifeline.
So if you’re in your 40s or even beyond, and the job search is getting you down, remember this – your age is a testament to your experience, not a limitation. And sometimes, the right door opens when a friend or colleague simply introduces you.
Keep going, keep connecting. You’ve got this.
