The Balance Between Health and Work: Extending Probation Periods

“Aunty, the company extended my probation period, just because I was hospitalised for 2 weeks, is it fair?”

Well, I don’t think it’s just a matter of “just because.”

Let’s break it down. Probation periods are designed to evaluate an employee’s performance and fit within the company. Let’s say your probation period is three months and you happen to be hospitalised for two weeks during that time, it’s more than just “missing work.”

During the week leading up to your hospitalisation, you were probably struggling with illness and your productivity likely took a hit. Then, in the week following your hospitalisation, as you recover, your pace may not be as swift as it once was. So, in essence, you’re fully functional for only two out of those three months.

Now, I know it might not seem ideal to extend a probation period, but let’s consider the alternative. Instead of immediate termination, the company chooses to extend the probation. I’m sure there was a reason behind this decision and it’s actually a chance for you to prove your consistent performance when you’re back on your feet.

Sometimes, it’s okay to take things a little slower to prioritise your health. Remember, a healthy, fully-functioning you contributes better in the long run. Communication is key. Talk to your boss, discuss your situation, and understand the reasons behind their decisions.

Together, you can find a balance that works for both sides.

Get well soon!
