Dhiren & May are some of the best bosses I’ve had the privilege to work with. This is one of my favourite stories as told by May when they were working together.
May had a staff who tendered resignation and asked for an early release. Let’s call him Patrick. May then went to her boss, Dhiren, for approval to grant Patrick the early release. Dhiren reminded May to have Patrick to write in officially to request for the early release which is a very important process in HR esp when it’s an ask from the employee. May thought she was close enough with Patrick that the hassle of getting him to write in was unnecessary. The company then naturally paid Patrick till his last physical day.
Then… Patrick lodged a complaint that the company did not pay his notice period & demanded for the compensation. May called her boss to tell him she had screwed up. She was waiting for her boss to scream at her, “I told you so!” But instead he asked calmly, “Did you learn your lesson?”
May answered, “Yes.”
Then Dhiren replied, “Then, it’s money well spent.”
