I recently reconnected with someone whom I had last spoken to 20 years ago. When we came out for coffee, as expected there were so much to catch up what we had missed in each other’s life. 20 years is indeed a very long time.
At one point of the conversation, he said to me, “Wow, you were really living a life of a high-flyer. Work hard, play hard, huh.” I paused for a moment and replied, “Yes, I did.” Then I smiled and continued, “Am still actually. Probably why I am on BP pills now.”
I am not sure about that high-flyer part but my body and mind did take a lot of beatings from all that working hard and playing hard for the past 20 years. It’s like this phrase written by William Chilcot that said, “These highflyers, when they are in their altitudes, suddenly their waxen wings melt, and down they fall headlong.”
I’ve made a lot of poor choices in my life in that journey of a so-called high-flyer. Poor choices in my health that I’ve been hospitalized one too many times. Poor choices in my relationships that it got me so depressed that I’ve wanted to take my life one too many times too.
Circumstances and consequences, I always say.
But everything happens for a reason, I supposed. Whatever it is, I’ve learnt it’s very important to accept so I can move on. To keep breathing so I can continue to work hard and play hard. Till I can’t anymore, perhaps =)
