Our Head

This morning, I had an interesting conversation with our Consulting Manager.

When you speak to a traditional person, esp an Asian, about seeing a clinical psychologist to manage one’s mental health, the person most likely will link it to craziness. Some actually do think mental illness is not ‘real’ because it’s just in our head.

“She is being manja and moody-lah, buy her Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream will be okay liao.”

For me, like how we go for medical check up to make sure the physical body is okay, I do think we should get our head check once in a while too. However, I also can understand, seeing a therapist is not a cheap affair. I know this cause I am also seeing a therapist right now to upkeep my mental health.

I am not crazy. I am not cuckoo either. Stress, perhaps and there is only so much alcohol can help, honestly. So, I am not ashamed to tell people I am seeing shrink because I do need help in that department.

But you know what is ‘real’? Social stigma against mental illness. It should stop.

It’s okay not to be okay, right? And when we are not okay, we seek help for it is imperative. Especially when it involves our head.
