The activity is to build a sofa with balloons, paper, masking tape and a string. The sofa must have a backrest, armrests & the balloons must not pop when a person is sitting on the sofa with legs lifted up.
Lesson #1: Assign the task to the right talent
In every team building activities, there will be multiple mini tasks to be completed. In a team, you’ll find different talents who are good in different things. I find it very important that in all of these activities, we need to pick the right person to complete the right tasks so everybody could contribute their best to the project.
Exactly like when we hire, we need to hire the right talent to fit the job.
Lesson #2: Plan the materials & keep track of time
In such activities, the trainers will always limit both time & material to complete the task. That is why it’s super important to plan so we don’t waste time & resources.
It did reminded me of the projects that were assigned to me at work. I’d be given a limited budget to work with & a deadline to complete the project. After the project brief, I always spend time planning, first. Just like one of my fav quotes by economist Alan Leiken, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”
And of course, after all that planning, execution is super important. That’s when we adapt self-help guru Napolean Hill’s quote, “Plan your work and work you plan.”
Lesson #3: Remember to risk to go far
This was my favorite part. In order to win, we need to stand out and take risk.
While all the teams picked the scrawniest team member to test the balloon sofa, we went the total opposite direction. We were so confident with how sturdy our sofa was, we had the heaviest person sat on it.
And as shown in the video, we were victorious.
