It basically refers to taking a break from work for a longer period of time. Like the term suggested, the word originated from the word “Sabbath” which according to Merriam-Webster, the 7th day of the week observed from Friday evening to Saturday evening as a rest day and worship by Jews and some Christians.
This Sabbatical Leave trend was started by Harvard & universities who offered their employers esp the academics as part of employee benefits where employees can go eat, pray, love for a year every 7 years. Imagine that! Being paid for 1 year without going to work!
Well, that is how it is, traditionally.
Today, paid sabbatical is not common anymore. There are reports that said states less than 10% of employers offer paid sabbatical leave. Unpaid sabbatical leave though, is. So it’s like a long-term unpaid leave-lah.
But what is more important to know is that during your sabbatical leave, your employment remains secured, like a secured career break.
