“I need to look for a special screw for this kind of wood.” Oh, I know a place that sells all sort of drill bits.
“I want to consolidate our payroll functions in the region.” Oh, I know a payroll outsourcing firm who can manage complex payroll.
“I need help to make uniforms for my restaurant.” Oh, I know a guy who designs and sews uniforms for F&B outlets.
Does that sound familiar? When we want to look for something/someone these days, we are looking for the specifics.
I remember back in the old days, when I first joined the staffing industry, most of us who were consultants, we were 360 consultants. We looked for clients, we sourced for candidates AND we managed the day to day HR matters for some odd 120 contractors per consultant.
But over the years I have seen the staffing business evolved to have separate consultants specializing in specific functions i.e. we have a consultant who specializes in Business Development, a separate consultant who specializes in Recruitment and another consultant who specializes in Employee Relations.
Because the concept is, with each consultant specializing in a specific task, she can focus & train to be a subject mater expert. So just like a production line when she is practicing the same job over and again, she can be better & will be much more efficient, yielding better quality.
Just like how the father of of modern economics, Adam Smith, used a pin factory in 1776 as an example on how a division of labour on how a pin can be produced in 18 specialized tasks from drawing the wire to cutting the wire to trading the pin.
Hyperspecialization. A large process broken down into bite sizes and individuals are trained to master the bites. I do agree that this is how the future is going to be.
Anyways… tomorrow I am going to the movies to watch the latest Adam – Black Adam that is! From the trailer, it looks so exciting and am so looking forward towards it.
