“What does integrity means to you?”
Oh wow. It’s a such a simple question. But it’s also a very important and big question.
Merriam-Webster defined it as “a firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values.”
Oxford defined it as “the quality of being honest and having strong principles.”
Me? When I see the word integrity, instantly a couple of words came jumbling in my head.
Trust. Honesty. Moral principles. Soundness. Righteousness. Honor. Pride. Dignity!
For me, my answer is also simple – integrity is about doing the right thing. Being honest with my feelings and intents, be it good or bad.
I have learnt in life, ‘doing the right thing’ is not as simple as it seems. Especially when nobody is looking. Because the intent can also be bad but I tell myself at the very least I need to be honest about it. That is integrity to me.
You know, just like the saying from Abraham Lincoln, “You can fool some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all the people all of the time.”
And that include our own freaking selves.
So be honest. Because at the end of the day, integrity is about being able to tell myself that I did the right thing so I can sleep well at night.
