I had the privilege to meet Professor Dr. Louis Adaikalam, better known as Dr. Sleep, at the Dynamic Workforce and Future Workplace Seminar organised by HRDC Sarawak yesterday.
I haven’t enjoyed a talk like the one he delivered in quite some time. Now, here’s astounding data he shared about the consequences of the Malaysian workforce not getting enough sleep!
💸 The burden of disease costs estimated around RM100.79 billion yearly, which is 7.35% of Malaysia’s GDP as reported by MOH & WHO in 2020.
😵 Mental health costs Malaysia RM14.46 billion as reported by Relate Mental Health in 2020.
🤒 Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer caused a loss of RM9 billion through absenteeism, presentism, and the premature death of working-age population in Malaysia, as reported by MOH & WHO in 2020.
💉 Compensation paid by SOCSO on industrial accidents amounted to RM1.4 billion in 2021.
That’s truly a substantial amount of money lost simply because we’re not getting enough sleep!
So, folks, consider going to bed early tonight, perhaps as early as 9pm, as recommended by Dr. Sleep.
Good night, folks 🌙⭐
