The Bare Minimum

Small business owners message me often saying that by educating the public about their basic employment rights, I’m going to bankrupt their businesses. Here’s what I have to say.

Far from bankrupting you, I’m trying to help. I’ve seen many small businesses grow into conglomerates. One common thing I’ve noticed is that, at one point, these businesses treated their employees well. There’s always a core team that has been through thick and thin with the company, and I can confidently tell you the core team was always there for the company because the company was always there for them when needed. Does that make sense?

The Employment Act is there to provide the minimum standards since 1955. So, my advice is, before you start your business, maybe you also want to study what is required at the bare minimum to hire an employee to help your business. Honestly, if you think providing the minimum is going to be a challenge, then you’re not ready to hire.

People are always the heart of the company. Remember that. Be fair to the employee. But also be fair to the employer, they say. However, from my experience, it will never hurt the business if we put the employee first.
