Discipline in the Workplace

When it comes to managing discipline in the workplace, one of the clearest lessons I’ve learned comes from the famous story of Sun Tzu, who was tasked with training the emperor’s concubines.

When the concubines refused to take Sun Tzu’s commands seriously, he demonstrated the importance of discipline by executing the emperor’s favourite concubines. This drastic action, though harsh, made the remaining concubines realise the gravity of their training, and they flawlessly followed his instructions afterward.

Without firm and decisive action, especially in response to serious misconduct, chaos can quickly spread. Just as Sun Tzu knew that discipline was the foundation of a well-functioning army, the same applies to the workplace.

When employees commit serious misconduct, it’s essential for companies to take the necessary disciplinary actions. Failing to do so can erode respect, order, and trust, especially when you’re managing a large workforce.

However, not all misconducts need to end with such harsh measures.

To learn more about the proper who, what, why, where, and how of taking disciplinary action, I’m conducting a 2-day class this November. We’ll explore how to handle misconduct fairly and effectively, keeping harmony in the workplace.
