I’m sure many of us have felt it before. The late nights… the extra tasks… the “Can you just help me with this? Sekejap je…” that turn into hours of unpaid labour. And then…
No “thank you”.
No recognition.
No bonus.
Just more expectations.
While being a reliable team member is a strength, I sometimes feel it’s also curse – people will take you for granted! The truth is, people (especially bosses) will keep piling on as long as we allow it.
So, don’t. Or at least be smart about it.
Speak up and advocate for our boundaries. “I’m happy to help with the compliance work, but I’ll need an extra headcount to support the added workload.”
Document and keep track with our contributions. If no one sees it, you know what, then let me show you. You will see it.
Demand accountability, especially when others aren’t pulling their weight. Don’t stay silent, but raise it constructively. Privately, and politely.
And to the leaders out there, take a moment and ask yourself: “Am I taking someone’s dedication for granted? If you are, thank them specifically.. Acknowledge them publicly. And yes, appreciate them by rewarding them fairly – monetarily.
Let’s break the cycle, together. A happy employee is a productive employee 😉
