POV: M for Measurable

It’s already the 7th of January, Tuesday. Most bosses are back to work, and it’s a perfect time to align your career goals with your company’s aspirations.

Here’s an advice: make an appointment with your boss to understand their goals for the year. Don’t wait for them to come to you. Be proactive and initiate the conversation.

When setting your SMART goals, pay special attention to M for Measurable. It’s not just about what you’re measuring but also agreeing on the source and method of measurement. From my experience, this step is often overlooked, and when appraisal time comes around in 6 or 12 months, tension starts to build.

Discuss clearly with your boss what a 4-pointer looks like versus what will make it a 5-pointer. Simulate real-life examples, too. Clarity now will save you a lot of headaches (and heartaches) later.

Once you’ve nailed down your goals and both parties have agreed on what success looks like, make sure those goals are visible. Pin them somewhere you’ll see every day, so you can plan your projects and stay on track throughout the year.
