Someone asked me last night, “Will being put on a PIP affect my future career prospects?”
Let me share my story – I’ve been demoted twice in my career. Do you think my career prospects are terrible now? No, right?! Just because you’ve failed one time (or in my case, two times), it’s not the end of the road.
What truly matters is how we handle that bump in our career.
As someone who also has overseen numerous PIPs, I’ve seen firsthand that employees can and do survive PIPs. Many of them are more successful than ever today. A PIP isn’t a career death sentence. On the contrary, it’s a chance to reflect, adapt, and grow.
However, I also understand many companies misuse PIPs to pressure employees into resigning or drive them out of employment. If you think that’s happening, here are my quick tips:
1. Document Everything. Keep detailed records of all communications, meetings and expectations related to the PIP. This documentation can be crucial if disputes arise.
2. Voice Concerns Politely. If you believe the PIP is unfair, express your concerns respectfully and ensure these discussions are documented.
3. Stay Professional. Keep your composure throughout the process. This not only reflects well on you but also strengthens your position if legal action becomes necessary.
Remember, how you handle the situation can make all the difference. Don’t fall into the trap of acting rashly.
