POV: Company Events on Non-Working Days

Dear Bosses & HR Comrades,

I know we all want the same thing – a happy, engaged team.
That’s why we organise teambuilding events, family days, and company trips.
The intention is good – we want to foster connection, lift morale, and build workforce harmony.

But let me gently say this, with all my love and and 20 years of corporate experience…
People treasure their off days.

It doesn’t matter how grand the event is.
Fireworks ke, lucky draw dapat trip to Japan ke – won’t be enough, k!
If it’s held on a non-working day and made compulsory, most people will show up reluctantly.
And when the day starts with resentment, how are we going to achieve the goal of team bonding and joy?!

So here’s my sincere suggestion:
🫰 If it’s on an offday e.g. weekends or public holiday – make it voluntary.
🫰 If it must be compulsory – replace it with a day off elsewhere.

When people feel respected and given agency, they show up with open hearts.
Real engagement happens when they come by choice, even when being herded like cows to naik bus.
And that’s how we truly build connection.

Let’s not turn good intentions into accidental burdens.
Let’s co-create memories, not stress.
Let’s treat weekends like they matter too.

Gitu.
