It’s very common that when we tender our resignation, bosses feel insecure.
They worry that without us, the work will fall back on their plate.
That’s why many reject requests to buy out the notice period or to offset it with annual leave.
From my experience, what helps the most is giving your boss comfort and confidence that things will run smoothly even after you leave.
Here are some practical steps that have worked well for me in the past:
1. Identify a successor. Suggest who can immediately step in to take over your duties..
2. Prepare a handover manual. A clear, step-by-step guide that others can refer to once you’re gone.
3. Schedule a handover meeting. Walk your boss through the plan so they see everything is under control.
To further ease the transition, you can also offer to be reachable for questions after your departure, or even provide support outside your new working hours for a small consultancy fee, if necessary.
The trick is to negotiate by showing responsibility.
When bosses see you’ve done your part to make the transition smooth, they are far more likely to agree to an earlier release.
All the best with your negotiations! 🍀
