POV: Title Inflation

Let’s learn another new organisational behaviour term today (I did!).
Title Inflation.

What is it? Oh you’re either going to love this or hate it.

Title inflation happens when companies give you a bigger, fancier job title without increasing your pay, authority, or actual responsibility.

It’s the workplace version of blowing a balloon full of air.
Nampak je besar, but it has no real weight.

Officer –> Specialist (konon)
Manager –> Head of Something (konon)
Head of Something –> Director of Something (konon)

Salary?
Same-same, no change.

Workload?
More of course!

Motivation?
Well, depends on our blood pressure that day.

It’s called “inflation” because just like currency inflation, the number goes up, but the value doesn’t.
The title grows, but what sits behind it….. doesn’t.

It’s a cheap way for companies to retain talent, honestly.
It’s like showing “career progression” without budget.
You know, keeping people feeling valued, but only cosmetically.

Really mah… I’m not wrong.

Anyway, I also want to say, people actually don’t mind working harder.
What really bothers us is being mind-tricked into thinking it’s a real promotion.

Hello! A real promotion = Title + Pay + Scope + Authority
Nothing less.

Happy weekend, everybody. This title inflation is becoming more common in companies trying to look like they’re developing people without actually paying them.
All for the sake of uplifting morale, they say.

Who are we really kidding here?

Think about it.

  1. The way I see it imo, financial institutions and maybe GLC have the most titles inflation. From what I heard AVP (assistant vice president) of a certain department or section is kinda like assistant manager in other industries. Of course the payscale might differ but the amount of responsibilities and workload is the same. But that’s just my view.
