Many people frown at pickleball courts, especially the hardcore badminton and tennis loyalists.
But the way I see it, it’s not really about the sport, but the space it creates.
For people like me who haven’t been active in sports for eons, it feels far more approachable compared to tennis or badminton.
The game is fairly quick, about 15 to 20 minutes to 15 points. Rules are also easy to remember.
In community play, players rotate. I sweat a little, rest a little, but the most fun part for me is the mingling. In between games, I get to chit-chat with new friends.
Cost-wise, if you gather 8 to 12 people to share a court, it’s very manageable. And if you want to play with a good paddle but can’t afford one yet, they’re available for rent.
And I’ve also noticed that the restrooms at pickleball courts are very competitive. Is there a regulation that says the toilets must be aesthetically superior? Every time I visit a new court, I always check out the restroom first!
For the longest time, I avoided pickleball because the courts were so far from Bukit Serdang. But after showing up to my first community play in December 2025 with the MKK gang and seeing how much my husband loved it, well, what the heck, it was worth the travel after all.
Who knew a paddle and a plastic ball could become a networking event disguised as exercise.
