I just learned about this phrase at a recent CHRO roundtable I attended.
Apparently, it has been floating around business, consulting, and tech circles lately.
It describes companies that operate at the edge of new economic and technological territory before it becomes mainstream. We are talking about experimenting with new business models and learning quickly from data and iteration.
Examples:
– OpenAI accelerating the development of large-scale generative AI models
– Netflix transforming entertainment through streaming technology and data-driven content decisions
– BYD scaling electric vehicle production and battery innovation at remarkable speed
Sometimes I feel frontier firms are not really all that visionary.
They are simply impatient.
You see, most companies wait until something is proven before adopting it. They want case studies, consultants, powerpoint slides, and a committee meeting that could last until the cows come home.
Frontier firms, though… they skip all that!
They try things early, sometimes recklessly even. But most importantly, often successfully.
Yes, technology tends to make companies stronger and bigger. However, if you give everyone the same AI tools, the playing field does not suddenly become equal.
Frontier firms, they move faster because they are built for speed.
The best companies get dramatically better.
The average companies becomes more average.
And the gap between leaders and laggards widens.
oof.
