“I don’t know… that video interview process felt so awkward… And that’s coming from someone who’s already comfortable on camera.”
“Yeah, but it’s such a common process now. I’ve gone through a few, and it’s alright.”
“Really?!”
That was my conversation with my Gen-Z team at Finlit Media after I told them I recently applied for a job and had to through a video interview.
Well to be fair, it was also my first ever video interview process. Zaman I dulu mana ada benda2 macam ni so canggih bila cari kerja!
For those who haven’t experienced one before, you basically record your answers to interview questions on your own.
In my case, I had 60 seconds to answer each question. No second take, okay! So for the second question onwards, I rehearsed my answer before hitting record. And there was one question I was struggling, I didn’t even finish my sentence then the recording suddenly ended.
I was like, “Oh no, oh no, oh no no no…”
It wasn’t a bad experience. In fact, I can understand why companies use it. It’s efficient and probably helps them screen large numbers of candidates.
But… it gave me goosebumps hahahahaha!
Maybe it’s because I’m so used to interviews being conversations. Talking to a camera that doesn’t react, nod, or ask follow-up questions just felt… cringe!
Now, Im curious. Have you ever gone through a one-way video interview? Was it just as cringe as I thought I was?
Tell me, please =}
