I’ve worked with and managed a few of them.
And I put up with them because they were very good at their jobs.
Worse, I kept making excuses for their poor behaviour because they delivered results.
Looking back, that was lazy leadership.
Eventually, I found myself keeping one superstar while losing three good people who were tired of working with them.
Yes, performance matters. But at what cost?
Nobody should be so good at their job that they get permission to make everyone else’s job miserable.
I eventually realised my best performer was simply too expensive to keep.
So last-last, I let them go.
Because one person’s performance should never come at the expense of everyone else.
