POV: A PIP Is Not the End of Your Career

Being placed on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) can be quite demoralising. I know this first hand.

Most employees see it as a warning that their days in the company are numbered. And many feel that no matter how hard they try, the decision has already been made.

And unfortunately, they’re not wrong.

But remember, being told you’re underperforming doesn’t mean you’re incapable of performing.

Sometimes, we genuinely need to improve. Other times, we’re simply in the wrong role, under the wrong leadership or in an environment where we cannot thrive.

Whatever the circumstances, don’t let a PIP become a verdict on your abilities.

Take the feedback seriously. Ask for clarity, support and a fair opportunity to improve. And if the environment is no longer right for you, start exploring other opportunities.

Most importantly, don’t give up on yourself just because someone else has given up on you.

Your performance can improve. Your circumstances can change. And your career can recover.

Trust me, they all can like mine did. 😉
