#AskLing: Not Letting Me Go

#Question: Can my current company reject an early release request? My new employer would want to buy out my current notice.

#Answer: No. Even if your new employer is not buying out your notice, you can also pay the notice in lieu yourself as per your employment agreement. Normally in the latter case, HR will just offset it with your last pay.

It’s a free country. One cannot stop the other from leaving.

Then comes the question, can they hold your pay for not serving the full notice? Also no. You should go report them to the labour office if they do.

But… I always say this – don’t burn bridges. Compromise & meet in the middle.

Have an open dialogue with your manager. Work on a handover plan and offer assistance & comfort that the new person taking over can reach out to you if need be even after you have left the company.

The world is very small after all. You never know if you guys will be working again.

Hope it helps.
