One Step Back

“I have this colleague who was my junior in school but she is like 2 levels higher than me.”

“Does it bother you?”

“Yeeaaaa…. somehow.”

“Well, at least you are happy now, so focus on that perhaps.”

“Yes, I am. So much happier.”

————(>.<)————–

Well, I know that I feeling. I have taken a salary cut before to go to a new job because I was not happy at the current company. I have also volunteered for a demotion before because I was not happy at the current role. Did I feel crappy about it? Of course, yes.

But I think, sometimes, we do need to take one step back so we can take two steps forward. Growth is rarely linear. Up & down, up & down and it’s the downs that can actually make us the better person, if it makes sense.

Besides, you know Chinese has this saying, 人比人,比死人 (rén bǐ rén , bǐ sǐ rén) which loosely translates to when you compare a person with another person, till death also you still will be comparing them. And more often than not, it’s always us who will end up being the bitter ones.

And this one too, 比上不足, 比下有余 (bǐ shàng bùzú bǐ xià yǒuyú) which loosely translates to when you compare with the the one above you, you will feel low and when you compare with the one below you, you will feel high. So, even if we want to compare, we find the right person to compare.

Count our blessings everyday. Perhaps, we won’t be so bitter after that.
