Throughout my career, I’ve heard numerous tales of departing employees being treated poorly by their bosses. The moment they tender their resignation, these employees are often sent to the cold storage with bosses abruptly ceasing communication.
In the imperfect corporate world, clashes of opinions, work styles, and approaches are bound to happen. It comes as no surprise that tensions can arise from these differences, and not all bosses can/will handle them with finesse. However, I count myself fortunate to have been blessed with bosses who understand the importance of nurturing positive relationships, even when our perspectives diverged. Well, most of them anyways =D
Whenever I hear all these horror stories about being subjected to the cold shoulder or enduring unbearable final days, I can’t help but feel incredibly lucky. Each time I’ve made the decision to move on from a job, (most of) my bosses have shown understanding, gracefully respected my choice, and extended well wishes and support for my future endeavours.
To those who aren’t as fortunate as I am, who have bosses allowing their insecurities or feelings of betrayal to overshadow the importance of maintaining positive relationships, remember, it’s truly their loss.
To my lucky bosses, thank you for reminding me that professionalism and kindness can go hand in hand. And to those bosses who missed the memo, well, your loss is my gain.
