It was the 10th year in my company I think when it happened. I was not doing that well in the company. Business was going through some drastic changes. People were leaving. New clients were not coming. I was definitely unhappy.
However, in that time of chaos, I was headhunted by another company with a good salary jump. Wow, an escape route! What a timing!
What a timing indeed. I remember telling myself, really? Is this how I should be copping out? There was a major restructuring going to happen because of new regulations from the government. I have a team under my care that was going to be put through the restructuring change the following year. Don’t I have the duty to ensure that they are transitioned into their new team properly and wait till they stabilize first?
Besides, you know how it is, if I would had left in such an unhappy moment, that is all I would remember. It would had over-written all the good memories I had with the company in the past decade. That was also the time I began to understand why people say ‘leave at your peak’.
So silly me did exactly that. I turned down the offer and stayed. I need to be better first. I waited till the team stabilized after the transition. I worked a little harder to ensure that the business was better and more importantly me being happier. So at the point I had another offer came to me again, I left with peace in my mind & my soul.
