True stories.
Story 1: There was a time I woke up and I couldn’t find my turtles. They escaped from the aquarium.
I called my boss panicking and told her I will be late to work because I don’t want to come back to find dead turtles. She laughed first, then said okay. I found them hiding behind the cabinet 30 mins later, put them back and went to work.
Story 2: There was another time, I woke up and found all of my rabbits murdered by stray dogs. Dead bodies were all over the garden.
I called my boss crying and wailing. She panicked, dropped everything and drove to my house. She hugged me and told me she will take care of the bodies. With my engineer housemate, they managed all the dead bodies. 2 adults, 3 children.
Then, she took me out for lunch and we went back to the office together after.
That boss of mine was May Chong. It’s her who taught me about Empathetic Leadership & it’s one of very important leadership lessons I’ve learnt throughout my career.
Because it’s true. A little empathy does go a long way.
