Before we attend an interview, it’s always beneficial for us to research and study a little bit more about the company. Especially if there is anything we are curious & doubtful about the company, during the interview itself is a good time to clarify with the interviewer.
These are some of my fav ways of learning more about the company.
1. Google – This is one of the easiest way. Just google the company name and see if there is any recent news about the company. Is the company setting up a new factory at a new location? Is the company in some sort of legal trouble? Did the company acquire any other company recently? Always useful to know.
2. The Company Website – In the company website, usually we would be able to learn about general information about the company. My fav page is where they talk about the company’s vision, mission and values. So I can understand more their purpose and also see if it syncs with mine.
3. Job Portals – I also like to go to job portals to find out what other positions they are actively recruiting. Sometimes, just by looking at their recruitment ads, you would roughly have an idea what the company is expecting from a potential candidate.
4. Our Network – I like to ask around my personal contacts if they know anything about the company. Can be a current employee, an ex-employee, a customer, a vendor, anybody. Sometimes, there will be stories that you will not able to learn from all of the above sources and more often that not, they are the most interesting information =D
So yes, knowledge is power. When we have the knowledge, not only it will help us to ace the interview, it can also enable us to make a better decision whether joining this company will be a good move for our career or not, if it makes sense.
