It’s truly unfortunate that some employers hold the view that internship should be viewed as free educational experience without compensation, and that interns should be grateful for the opportunity without demanding additional compensation, such as an allowance.
Let’s be honest. The main reason why employers hire interns is not out of generosity towards the education system. They hire interns because interns are cost-effective labourers. So, let’s not kid ourselves here.
Although interns are technically students, they are actually part of the workforce. Hence, they should be treated fairly and provided with a positive working experience the same. This includes appropriate training, supervision, and meaningful work assignments. And since they are often hired as “affordable” source of labour, it’s only fair to compensate them for their work. At the very least, interns should receive an allowance to subsidize their transportation and meals.
Most importantly, offering fair compensation is also a way to demonstrate a commitment to supporting interns and recognizing their contributions to the organizations, promoting better workforce harmony, don’t you think?
Happy weekend, everyone. Let’s remember that investing in the next generation of workers is essential for the country’s brighter future. Let’s work towards a more equitable and inclusive workforce, one internship at a time =}
